The diagnosis of a debilitating medical condition such as Parkinson's disease may eventually mean that an individual will be unable to continue working. If you meet the criteria for the Social Security Administration's listing of impairments, you may be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.
A report from the National Institutes of Health finds a recent study has linked the use of the pesticides paraquat and rotenone to the development of Parkinson's disease. In fact, it was discovered that those who used the pesticides had a 2 ½ times greater likelihood of developing Parkinson's in comparison to those who didn't.
It should be noted that these pesticides are not used in the average home, and instead are in use in agricultural settings. While these factors don't exist for all individuals, researchers can use the information to better understand the biologic changes that could impact the disease. The hope is that this could provide better direction toward the treatment and potentially the prevention of Parkinson's disease. It also gives farmers and other agricultural workers important information about how they can protect their own health.
Research into this disease continues as the Parkinson's Disease Foundation (PDF) reports that as many as 1 million individuals in the United States are living with the condition. Additionally, 60,000 people are diagnosed every year and it's unclear how many cases go undetected.
If you have been diagnosed with a severe condition that prevents you from being able to engage in substantial gainful activity you should consult with a Social Security disability attorney who can help determine if you qualify for disability benefits.
