Chemo-Resistant Colon Cancer Linked to Gene Mutation

In a report from the Doctor’s Lounge, chemo-resistant colon cancer may be linked to a gene mutation. When cancer becomes disabling, it may qualify an individual to receive Social Security disability benefits.

The findings of a new study appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, Jan. 5 issue. The TFAP2E gene is found to be linked to those patients who have advanced colon cancer and are resistant to some types of chemo.

The study found those patients with the gene to be resistant to a commonly used chemotherapy, fluorouracil. However, they didn’t appear to be resistant to other chemotherapy drugs such as oxaliplatin or irinotecan.

Researchers indicate this initial finding may lead to further testing. Identifying this particular gene in patients could help in the development of new targets for therapy or selecting specific chemotherapy.

Whether you were diagnosed with colon cancer or any other severe health condition, you may be unable to continue working. If you need assistance with applying for disability benefits or appealing a claim that was denied, you should seek legal counsel.

A Palm Beach County disability attorney may be able to assist you. They will take the time to evaluate your case and determine if you do qualify to receive Social Security disability benefits.
