June 6, 2010 - It has taken some time, but both the House and the Senate approved expanding care at Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) medical centers to include chiropractic care. Unfortunately they disagree on how many VA medical centers should offer chiropractic services.
The Senate's passage occurred earlier this year and provided for chiropractic treatment at 42 VA medical centers. Conversely, the legislation the House passed required chiropractic care at every VA medical center. Most likely, the two will come to some compromise if they have any hopes of having chiropractic care included in any veteran's health care legislation this year.
House bill HR 1017 expands chiropractic care in two steps. The first step would require 75 VA medical centers to provide the care by the end of 2011 and all 153 providing it by the end of 2013. On average, every chiropractor will cost approximately $115,000 per year.
Rep. Bob Filner (D-Calif) sponsored the House bill and sees it is necessary given the weight soldiers are forced to carry. The weight of the soldiers' loads have been increasing injuries in returning veterans because of the extreme stress the weight places on soldiers' backs and joints.
The most prevalent injury plaguing veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are musculoskeletal disorders. Over 52% of returning veterans from these wars have been diagnosed with this disorder and yet the VA cannot properly handle this issue. Obviously both the House and the Senate agree the care is needed, it is just a matter of deciding the extent of chiropractic care availability.
Soldiers can return home with a number of conditions, injuries, and aggravated preexisting conditions. If you believe you have a service-connected physical or psychological injury you may be entitled to Veterans’ Disability Compensation.
