The
Doctor's Lounge reports that cholesterol management may decrease a person's risk of developing Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease is a severe medical condition that may lead an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits.
While maintaining healthy cholesterol has been shown to have cardiovascular benefits, according to a new study it may also aid in preventing Alzheimer's. This new study was published in December's issue of
Archives of Neurology.
Statistics from the study indicates that individuals older than 65 with low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), otherwise known as good cholesterol, were found to have a 60% greater chance of developing Alzheimer's. This was in comparison to individuals who had higher levels of good cholesterol.
The study also reports that more than 50% of Americans have higher levels of bad cholesterol, putting them at risk for a number of diseases including Alzheimer's.
Researchers indicate that HDL levels can be increased by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising and eating a healthy, well-balanced diet.
This is important since more than 5 million people in the United States have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to triple by the year 2050.
If you have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or any other severe mental or physical condition, Social Security disability benefits may be available. A
Social Security disability attorney can help determine if you qualify.
When you are interviewing
