The June issue of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention posted findings that cigarettes in America are more harmful than cigarettes in foreign countries.
These findings indicate that in comparison to countries such as Canada, Australia or the United Kingdom, tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) are tripled in American-made cigarettes.
TSNAs are the potent carcinogens found in tobacco once it has been cured and processed. Americans have a greater exposure in the mouth and lungs to TSNAs than those from other countries. This increases the risk of not only developing cancer but other serious smoking-related diseases.
Although the harmful use of cigarette smoking has been widely reported, statistics on cigarette smoking indicate that the rate of usage has not declined.
Smoking can lead to numerous diseases and result in an individual becoming disabled and unable to work. Every year in the United States more than 443,000 people die from smoking-related diseases. The cost for healthcare related to these diseases is about $96 million.
