Alzheimer's disease is a debilitating condition that can eventually lead to an individual being unable to work or even unable to perform normal daily tasks. Social Security disability benefits may be available if you suffer from Alzheimer's disease.
Eli Lilly has halted clinical trials for a new treatment for Alzheimer's patients after it was found that the drug, Semagacestat, that was intended to reduce plaque in the brain and bring improvement was shown to do the very opposite.
Instead, patients in the trial were less able to perform typical tasks and their cognitive functioning diminished. In addition, it was found that the clinical drug led to a higher risk of skin cancer.
Now officials from Eli Lilly will have to follow more than 2,600 patients from 31 countries who had participated for 6 months or more in these clinical trials.
This setback has at least revealed that plaque is not the only target in trying to improve the quality of life for Alzheimer's patients. Instead, medical researchers must examine a multitude of targets.
This latest drug failure follows other attempts that have been made to try and stop the progression of Alzheimer's.
