Researchers have found that DNA tests could diagnose colon cancer sooner. This is important since early detection can make a significant difference in treating this serious disease. When an individual is going through treatment for colon cancer they may require long-term disability benefits to help meet their financial needs.
Colorectal cancer results in about 50,000 deaths every year in the United States. While sometimes fatal, there are viable treatment options when detected at an early stage.
Detecting tumors at the earliest stage is important, which is why individuals over the age of 50 are encouraged to have a colonoscopy. The reality is that many adults don't have one done and even if they do, sometimes colonoscopies are unable to detect signs of cancer.
New DNA testing was found to detect colon polyps and tumors, telling them apart from healthy tissue. The results were no false positives and 100% sensitivity in detection.
This October, clinical trials will begin with 1,600 patients. The expectation is that this DNA testing could detect 85% of colon cancer and 50% of precancerous polyps. It would be a test done at home and depending on the results, may result in the need for a colonoscopy. Further research continues to be done.
