According to a report from the Doctor’s Lounge, colorectal cancer screening should be done annually. If cancer has resulted in your missing time from work, long-term disability benefits may be available to you.
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) is recommending that individuals who are 50 or older consider getting an annual screening for colorectal cancer. A screening can find polyps (precancerous growths) which would lead to early treatment.
Polyps are the precursor to cancer and immediate treatment can halt the progression into cancerous tumors.
ASGE also indicates that death rates from colorectal cancer are decreasing, and screening is credited for the decline. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) backs this up, reporting that between 2003 and 2007 there were 66,000 colorectal cancer cases prevented and 32,000 lives that were saved. Half of these prevented cases and saved lives were a result of screening.
Although it is the 3rd most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in the U.S., only 1 in 3 adults actually get screened for colorectal cancer.
