Doctor's Lounge reports that combination therapies may be beneficial for treating aggressive
breast cancer. When a person is diagnosed with a severe mental or physical disability, he or she may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits if the condition renders them unable to work.
Researchers report that
instead of patients receiving just one type of drug or undergoing chemotherapy treatment alone, a combination of therapies may better fight HER2-positive breast cancer, which is a more aggressive form of cancer.
This comes after researchers conducted 3 trials where patients were treated with 2 or more drugs. These patients had a significantly higher rate of remission than those who had received only chemotherapy or just one type of drug.
The drug therapy combinations were found to produce drastic reductions in the size of the tumors or had even exterminated them. This happened whether or not chemotherapy was also given.
Some of the drug therapies that were used in the trials include Tykerb, Herceptin, Taxol and Pertuzumab. There were some side effects such as liver function abnormalities and a low white blood cell count but they were found to be countered when the dosage was lowered.
