Common Genetic Mutation Found in Lou Gehrig’s Disease

In a report from Health Day, a common genetic mutation has been found in those who have Lou Gehrig's disease. Lou Gehrig's disease can be debilitating and lead to an individual being unable to work, which may qualify you for Social Security disability benefits.

Common in about a third of those with Lou Gehrig's disease, is a genetic mutation, C90RF72, found in chromosome 9. This has led researchers to believe that Lou Gehrig's disease and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are not 2 separate diseases but one.

With this information, researchers hope to gain a better understanding of the root cause for these diseases, leading to what could be improved treatment plans.

Both of these diseases have varied symptoms; however, many patients with either one often develop symptoms of the other. One of the complications of Lou Gehrig's disease is paralysis and eventually death.

With FTD, symptoms include difficulty with walking, movement, emotional difficulties, and behavioral problems. Both of these diseases can become disabling.

While the finding of this common genetic mutation is helpful, there's still much more research that needs to be done in order to learn how it works. If you've been diagnosed with a severe mental or physical condition that prevents you from working, then you should consult with a Hallendale Social Security disability lawyer.
