Communities in Texas and all across the nation are feeling the strain of the VA's lack of sufficient mental health care services for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, according to the El Paso Times.
El Paso is struggling to keep up with a high demand by veterans seeking help for mental health problems. The nearby Beaumont Army Medical Center regularly refers patients to community health centers in El Paso - a community health system already battling a lack of $2 million in funding.
The VA currently operates one residential mental health center in Texas, however the waiting list for care is two months. There is a minimum three-week wait to see at family therapist at Fort Bliss.
Nearly 300,000 of the 1.6million military personnel that have deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan have stress disorders or are suffering from severe depression.
