Conditions At Tampa’s VA Infuriates Patient’s Family

October 29, 2010 - PFC Corey Kent won the Purple Heart after losing both his legs and all the fingers on one of his hand, and was recovering at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was then moved to the James A. Haley Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Since that happened, his condition has worsened. According to his family, the blame lies solely with the Tampa VA and their "horrendous" conditions.

Kent's stepfather, Dan Ashby, took a series of pictures of the inside of the VA. One of them shows a filthy bathroom and the other of what they believe to be mold growing on the floor. If these pictures are an accurate depiction of how the inside of the Tampa VA is maintained, it is nowhere near the level of the care that VA patients deserve. Kent's family is wholly disappointed in the entire situation.

Ashby uploaded the pictures he claims are from the Tampa VA to Facebook. According to Ashby, Kent has completely regressed in his recovery since he arrived at the Tampa VA. Ashby is outspoken about the conditions in hopes things will change. He doesn't want anyone to have to endure the treatment Kent is dealing with while in the Tampa VA.

Local news crews were denied access to the VA to verify Ashby's claims. Congressman Connie Mack (R-FL.) has also gotten involved and is apparently investigating Ashby's allegations. Kent will likely return to Walter Reed after recovering from gallbladder surgery.
