Congressional Members Criticize the Miami VA

According to an article in The Miami Herald, a recent Congressional hearing resulted in multiple lawmakers criticizing the performance of the director for the Miami Veterans Affairs (VA) Administration, Mary Berrocal, since the 2009 contaminated colonoscopy scandal and some say she should be fired.

Representatives from both sides of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee feel Berrocal, and the staff she leads, isn't doing enough to recover from the residual issues of exposing almost 2,500 veterans to HIV, among other illnesses. The committee claims her actions are negatively impacting veterans with disabilities and other veterans seeking care at the Miami VA hospital.

Some people defended the work Burrocal has accomplished, and they believe she's working for the veterans' best interests.
One issue everyone agrees on is ensuring accountability is established "at the local level." Many believe that accountability ultimately resides with Berrocal for the entire Miami VA hospital.

Lawmakers also looked into the issue of a mentally troubled veteran the Miami VA released from their custody that went on to shoot at a Miami-Dade police officer
, and was killed for those actions. To date, no VA employees had been disciplined for that incident.

An earlier hearing in front of a VA board resulted in the conclusion that Berrocal "should be disciplined for ‘lack of oversight'" in the Miami VA's failure to notify veterans about the contaminated colonoscopy equipment. At the time of the Congressional hearing, Berrocal had already been admonished, which will remain on her employee record for the next 2 years.
