The Houston Veterans Cemetery was first accused of censoring religious speech in a prayer during a Memorial Day ceremony. Later in the month the director of the cemetery, Arleen Ocasio, was accused of banning the use of the word "God" at soldiers' memorials and funerals. Those alleged actions have resulted in veterans groups filing multiple lawsuits against the cemetery as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Both the VA and the cemetery denied any wrongdoing at the time and have continued to deny such allegations. Accusations of the cemetery's ongoing religious suppression continue despite the VA and the cemetery denying any such practices.
In an effort to evaluate the legitimacy of the claims, Texas Congressman John Culberson (R-Tx) went undercover at a VA funeral. According to Rep. Culberson, the cemetery is continuing to attempt to ban use of the word "God."
Rep. Culberson is on the House Appropriations Sub-Committee and plans on using that position to compel Ocasio's resignation. Culberson said he has the ability to completely take away funding for Ocasio's position, and he intendeds to do just that.
