Time Healthland reports that a new study finds the cost of cancer care is high and is expected to significantly increase over time due to more people developing the disease. When cancer has left you disabled, then you could qualify to receive Social Security disability benefits.
Worldwide, the cost to treat cancer is about $286 billion for the 12 million people who have been diagnosed. Estimates reveal that by 2030, about 22 million people will be in need of cancer care treatment, with the cost rising as well.
While these costs can be attributed to other factors, such as lost wages and/or earning potential, more than half of the costs are related to a patient's medical care, and advancements in treatment and technology, come with an increase in price.
Additionally, the report found that increases in cancer care costs are expected because of the aging population. All of this can lead to some patients making difficult decisions concerning their treatment, with some being unable to and others refusing it.
The study found that increased costs were also related to the use of expensive diagnostic equipment and unnecessary tests. At this point, according to the authors of the study, the outlook is that the cost of cancer is quickly becoming unsustainable.
