Cuts for SSI Recipients in Pennsylvania

Economically disadvantaged individuals and families in Pennsylvania who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will soon receive less income from their monthly SSI payments.

Philly.com reports that beginning Feb. 1, nearly 350,000 people, most of whom are blind, disabled, or elderly, will receive a cut in SSI payments. The cuts are a result of 20-25% reductions to the state-provided SSI supplement, which adds anywhere from $27 to $42 to recipient's SSI checks.

This means a $5 per month income loss for individuals who receive SSI and $10 per month for couples that receive SSI. The figure may seem relatively low when compared to recent cuts made to other public programs, but a $5-$10 income loss can have a drastic impact on an individual or family that counts on every single dollar that SSI provides.

While these disabled and elderly individuals in Pennsylvania cope with a decrease in their monthly SSI benefits, many people around the country struggle to even receive SSI benefits in the first place. If you are disabled and have been denied SSI benefits, you may have questions about how to receive the financial support you do desperately deserve.
