Dementia Risk Elevated in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke

A report from the Doctor's Lounge indicates that the risk of dementia is elevated in those individuals who have suffered a stroke and have atrial fibrillation. However, according to new research, the risk of dementia is not linked to atrial fibrillation when the individual did not also suffer a stroke.

With age the risk of developing atrial fibrillation and suffering a stroke increases. In a study published in the March 8 issue of Neurology, it was reported that more than 2 million people in the United States have atrial fibrillation. This raises concerns that extend beyond the risk of stroke, as it may also play a role in the development of dementia.

Results of a study showed that 25% of those individuals with atrial fibrillation who had a stroke were more likely to develop dementia, in comparison to survivors of stroke who did not have atrial fibrillation.

Researchers indicate that strokes involving the left middle cerebral artery could cause brain damage, which may contribute to the potential development of dementia. Further research will need to be conducted.
