Dept. of Veterans Affairs On Cutting Edge Of Genomics Research

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) launched a ground-breaking research program this month focusing on genomics. The Million Veteran Program (MVP) will examine how human genes impact health. The nature of the research will undoubtedly lead to the VA providing better, more focused, and more efficient healthcare.

The VA exists in a unique position, which will keep them on the cutting edge of this field. They will be able to combine and compare the genetic research against exposure to a military lifestyle. The result will be a consolidated database, which will be used to research wellness in lifestyles as it relates to specific health problems.

It is hoped researchers will be able to produce links between "genetic variations" and certain health conditions. The application of this research will better our current level of screening for diseases, which means earlier diagnosis, which will hopefully mean more valuable and successful treatment options.

The VA hopes those veterans under VA care will participate in the MVP research on a national level in the next 5 to 7 years. Because security is always a VA concern, no collected blood samples will contain any identifying personal information. This is important because the VA has potential access to a million veterans, which greatly strengthens their research pool.
