The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is setting the pace and the example in reforming the ways in which they hire. The hiring reform is part of a larger federal government effort to simplify the hiring process so as to be able to hire better people faster.
No longer will applicants be required to submit the knowledge, skills, and abilities essays, but instead must use cover letters.
Hiring managers can now recruit and hire applicants with specific skills needed to fulfill particular workforce requirements. At the same time, agencies will attempt to ensure
the hiring process takes no more than 80 days, on average.
The VA, however, is leaps and bounds ahead of other federal agencies. Its hiring time has already been reduced to 81 days, on average, from the 105 it previously took on average, and it is using new technology to train managers in the newly implemented process. The faster things are improved, the more money is saved, and the better candidates feel about applying for positions.
Hiring 30,000 to 50,000 people every year takes an incredible amount of time and energy. Streamlining the hiring process and making it more efficient is vital. The VA is utilizing technology as much as possible to not only advertise jobs and reach potential applicants, but to keep applicants informed of their status during the hiring process.
Reforming the hiring process is a multi-step process. Incorporating new technology on this scale necessitates a cultural change across the board to be successful.
