Development of Multiple Sclerosis Inside and Outside of the Brain

In a report from Medline Plus, a new study shows that multiple sclerosis (MS) may develop from the outside of the brain and move inward. If MS becomes debilitating, it could lead to the need for Social Security disability benefits.

The possible origination of MS could be the gray matter, which covers the brain (cortex) and the fluid which cushions and surrounds it. Whereas it has always been assumed it starts in the white matter that makes up the core of the brain.

The cortex plays a role in attention, memory, and other components of the nervous system. These can become impaired with MS. While experts have always known of the impact MS can have on this area of the brain, this is the first time they’re seeing that it could also be where it starts.

This condition affects approximately 400,000 people in the U.S. and can cause disabling symptoms such as dizziness, tremors, weakness, fatigue, numbness, vision problems, and paralysis; however, these new findings could lead to changes in the way MS is diagnosed and how it’s treated.

If you’ve been diagnosed with MS or any other severe condition that has severely impaired your ability to function, then you could qualify to receive Social Security disability benefits. To learn if you’re eligible, you should speak as soon as possible to a Georgia Social Security disability attorney.
