Diesel Fumes Linked to Lung Cancer

When you are diagnosed with a serious disease, like lung cancer, it can raise concerns about how you will take care of your family while you undergo treatment and recovery. Social Security disability benefits may be available if your illness is preventing you from being able to work.

A recent analysis suggests that diesel fumes may be linked to lung cancer. In fact, workers who are exposed to these fumes year after year may find their risk of developing lung cancer to be much higher.

Jobs such as railway work or mining expose individuals to high amounts of diesel exhaust. While these findings were recently reported in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, researchers are quick to point out that it doesn't necessarily mean that diesel fuel is the culprit. Other factors were not considered, such as workers who may also smoke.

At the same time, this only increases the evidence that it is hazardous to lungs to be exposed to diesel exhaust over a long period of time. Tiny particles found within can go deep into the lungs and cause chronic problems such as asthma.

Researchers will continue to look into the link between lung cancer and diesel fumes.
