Those who receive Supplemental Security Income or Social Security disability benefits often qualify for extra income assistance. This can range from discounted or free cell phone service, to assistance with paying utilities. Disabled residents of Alaska may now also qualify for help in buying new appliances.
KTVA reports that anyone in Alaska who receives disability payments from either the state or federal government will now be issued vouchers to purchase new appliances. If you are a disabled Alaskan resident, you are encouraged to recycle your old appliances in favor of new Energy Star qualified models, which are known for saving on electricity.
Qualified appliances include washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, and freezers. Residents in rural areas may receive extra assistance to cover the cost of shipping. The program is set to begin this month and should continue through September 2011, provided funds last through that date.
Residents are permitted 1 voucher for each appliance type. Those in rural areas will be given $300 for washing machines and dishwashers, while those in more urban areas will receive $150 for a similar purchase. Vouchers for freezers and refrigerators for rural residents will be $500, and those in major cities will receive $300. All participants will have to show proof of their disability status.
