Experts are hopeful that major changes to the Medicare system will lead to better patient care and follow-up for the disabled. Some of the highlights of recent reports to the Senate Finance Committee include a pay increase for primary care physicians, closer scrutiny of the decisions made by specialists and penalties for hospitals that do not offer proper follow-up care.
The sweeping changes are designed to improve patient care and streamline the current system. Hopefully more of the uninsured in Florida will be able to take advantage of the new and improved system. In addition, if the changes are positive, the Medicare overhaul could provide a model for Medicaid and the U.S. healthcare system as a whole.
