A homeless man who has been denied Social Security disability benefits for eight years recently received a $2300 check from the Social Security administration. The SSA has said it will also send him weekly checks of $761.
The New York City resident, Male Aquino, is disabled and homeless and has opted to not stay in public shelters because of the high incidence of drug use in city shelters. Mr. Aquino was denied Social Security disability benefits as recently as Oct. 2009.
Male Aquino believes that he might have received the recent Social Security payment because his story of past denials had been featured on NBC affiliate Channel 4 in New York. He said the TV coverage likely played a role in the Social Security administration finally responding to his requests.
Homeless individuals have a right to receive Social Security disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. If you or someone you love is homeless and disabled, you deserve to have access to certain public financial assistance programs.
Living in a homeless shelter may affect your ability to collect SSI benefits. In some cases, residing in a public institution might mean that you are unable to collect some Social Security disability benefits. Applying for Social Security disability benefits can be a complicated process, particularly for those who are denied.
