Many disabled individuals who receive Social Security disability benefits are also eligible for Medicare. But it is important to know that this government funded healthcare program may not offer as complete of coverage as many disabled individuals need. It's important to ask a Social Security expert for help in understanding what the various programs will, and will not, cover.
Seattlepi.com reports that Skip Rodvold, 53, who suffers from polycystic kidney disease, is currently on dialysis and receiving disability payments. Rodvold is a good candidate for a much-needed kidney transplant, which he can receive with the help from the Kidney Disease Program, a state-funded program in Washington.
Unfortunately, Rodvold was in desperate need of dental work at the time of his anticipated transplant, and gum or mouth disease can prohibit people from obtaining transplants because of the risk of infection.
Medicare does not cover dental work, and most dentists do not accept Medicaid. Therefore, some patients, like Rodvold, cannot get transplants simply because they first need dental work, which they cannot afford.
Rodvold was forced to refinance the house he owns with his wife, who is also disabled. He used the $7,500 in savings to pay for his dentures and tooth extractions. This was a hardship for the couple, whose combined income is about $30,000 annually.
While Rodvold was originally told that only a small portion of his dental work could be paid for by state assistance, a recent policy change meant that nearly all of the costs would have been paid. Unfortunately, Rodvold was told of this too late. By later asking questions, he was able to get reimbursed for most of the costs, but not without first having to suffer an unbearably long wait for the transplant that he so desperately needs.
