For 7 years,
Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation has hosted a 4-day winter sports event benefitting disabled veterans and their families. This year’s event brought together 26 disabled veterans and active-duty military personnel and their families for a weekend of snow and sports in Newry, Maine.
Over Super Bowl weekend, the veterans who attended were able to enjoy free access to the Sunday River resort, which included all equipment, lodging, meals, and family entertainment. The Veterans/No Boundaries program is one of Maine Adaptive’s initiatives to provide disabled veterans and disabled active-duty personnel with assistance in participating in popular winter sports and recreational activities.
Participants took part in skiing races, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and were treated to dogsled and snowmobile tours, and a Super Bowl party. The
disabling conditions seen amongst the service members included post-traumatic stress disorder, back injuries, spinal trauma, and nerve damage.
The 4-day program helped bring disabled veterans and their families together to share a common bond of recovery and the trials of adapting to life with a disability after service. Captain Kirsten Kroll, an occupational therapist with the Army Medical Specialty Corps., attended the No Boundaries program with her family. She believes that the benefits of Maine Adaptive’s
programs are helping disabled service members physically, mentally, and socially.
