Disabled Veterans Compete in National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic

For 4 years, veterans have traveled to San Diego to participate in the National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic, which was designed for veterans with disabilities. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) sponsors the clinic, which is open to all veterans who have been injured in the last 6 years.

The Clinic is also considered a "rehabilitation sporting event," according to an article on KPBS News. The clinic lasted for 5 days, from September 18-23, with more than 100 veterans participating. For some disabled veterans, getting to the clinic can be as challenging as the events themselves.

Many of the participants enjoy the camaraderie that comes with the games
. Being in an environment surrounded by other veterans helps many of the participants compete. Many of the veterans suffer common injuries that have led to their disability. Some of the more common injuries include:

  • spinal cord injuries;
  • neurological conditions;
  • burns; and
  • orthopedic amputations.

The Summer Sports Clinic shows veterans they do not have to be homebound because they are injured or disabled. That positive outlook is necessary for many veterans during their recovery process because mental therapy is just as important as physical therapy.

If you are a disabled veteran who has been denied disability compensation or have not yet applied for benefits from the VA, a South Florida disability attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg is ready to help.
