Disabled Veterans of America Help Vietnam War Veteran Save Cattle

Texas rancher and Vietnam War veteran Rick Peterson felt the impact of the droughts that have been plaguing the northeast part of Texas for the past several months and would have had to sell off his herd if it were not for the support given by the Disabled Veterans of America (DVA) group.

Ken Pickard, a member of the DVAs branch in Michigan, heard about Petersen’s situation and worked up a crew of supporters
to help save the herd. Through networking and donations, Pickard has helped arrange a donation of 8,400 pounds of hay from Northern Michigan to be delivered to the Texas ranch.

The hay will cost $2,300 to transport, but this is being covered by cash donations to the DVA. The Texas state commander of the DVA, Ken Hackney, is amazed and grateful for the support of both state branches as they collaborate on this assistance effort to another veteran.

Support for veterans is available in many forms, from disability benefits to employment opportunities
. It is up to veterans to seek out the type of benefits and help they are entitled to, and many advocacy organizations can help connect them and their families to local organizations.
