It is no surprise that extended and multiple deployments required of many troops would cause tremendous strain their marriages. Spouses at home are forced to manage their families and households without their husband or wife. The stress has also contributed to higher suicide rates and more mental health problems among troops.
It was estimated that 10,200 active duty Army marriages ended in divorce for the budget year ending Sept. 30, 2008 - 3,077 of those failed marriages were amongst Marines. These statistics make sense since Army and Marine personnel have been the bulk of the land force fighting the today's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The military is keeping a close watch on the numbers and have created programs aimed at helping couples cope with the many wartimes stresses.
