Doctors Fail to Follow Guidelines for Women at Risk of Breast and Ovarian Cancer

The Doctor's Lounge reports that a new study finds doctors are failing to follow guidelines for women who are at a high risk of breast and ovarian cancer. When undergoing treatment for cancer, it could lead an individual to seek long-term disability benefits.

Evidence has shown that women who carry genetic mutations (BRCA1 or BRCA2), or have a family history, are at a significantly higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Genetic testing could reduce this when done on women who are considered high risk.

Yet a study revealed that only 41% of doctors would actually refer women at high risk for genetic testing.  Since there are risks to this type of testing, it is not recommended for those with an average risk; however, 29% of doctors said they would refer women who weren't at high risk.

Researchers indicate that more needs to be done so that women who would benefit from these services receive them. On the other hand, those who don't need genetic testing should not be referred.
