According to an article on Allvoices.com, the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are implementing alternative treatment programs for veterans with disabilities from mental health issues.
The DoD has set aside billions of dollars to look into specific alternative methods of healing. The Pentagon will put forward $5 million specifically to research acupuncture and meditation to help U.S. veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Army also dedicated $4 million to research alternative treatments for PTSD, depression, substance abuse, and anixiety.
The government’s usual approach is to prescribe powerful drugs of various flavors and put veterans into therapy. That’s fine for those who respond to that type of therapy, but not everyone does. There are facts and testimonials of many people celebrating how effective transcendental meditation (TM) is for its practitioners at almost no cost and no risk.
The military has faced its own problems with the drugs they’re prescribing. Seroquel has been tied to killing soldiers who are taking it and Risperidone has been shown to be completely ineffective. In the meantime, a report published earlier this year showed veterans with PTSD “had a 50% decrease in their symptoms” following 8 weeks of actively practicing TM.
There are many VA clinics across the country that have already implemented alternative methods of treatment such as TM, yoga, and acupuncture. The VA recently began implementing chiropractic help at VA clinics across the country too.
