The most common type of cancer for women to develop is breast cancer. The standard treatments for breast cancer-particularly aggressive forms of the disease-can literally keep a person off of their feet and on bed rest for long periods of time. While undergoing treatment, long-term disability benefits may help cover lost wages for those who qualify.
The Journal of the National Cancer Institute recently published a report that drinking alcohol may increase the risk for breast cancer. They found that women who consumed at least one alcoholic drink a day had a higher risk of developing 2 types of breast cancer.
Estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor-positive breast cancers, along with noninvasive breast cancers were found to be increased with alcohol use. Researchers, however, don't believe that alcohol is the only contributing factor since the results were changed when hormone replacement therapy was used.
A surprising find in this study is that women who drank alcohol weren't more at risk for the most common type of breast cancer, ductal carcinoma. They were at a higher risk of developing lobular carcinoma, a hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.
Researchers will continue to look into the multiple factors that may play a part in breast cancer development. If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are undergoing treatment that prevents you from working, contact a long-term disability lawyer who can help you determine eligibility for disability benefits.
