Drug Found to Possibly Treat and Prevent Breast Cancer

In a report from Health News, a cancer drug has been found to not only treat but may even prevent breast cancer. This drug has been found to reduce the risk of breast cancer by more than 50%.

The drugs are hormone-blocking pills called aromatase inhibitors. Brand names include Aromasin, Femara, Arimidex. Generic forms are also available. These drugs are found to have less serious side effects than other types of medication.

While doctors have already been using this cancer drug to prevent breast cancer from returning in women who are post-menopausal, these new findings suggest benefits in preventing breast cancer the first time around.

Those who are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer can currently choose from 2 types of treatment, raloxifene and tamoxifen; however, both of these drugs carry some risks of serious side effects such as blood clots and uterine cancer.

Women now have an additional way to help prevent and treat breast cancer.
