Earlier Chemo Treatment Beneficial to Colon Cancer Surgery Patients

If you are undergoing chemo or radiation for the treatment of cancer, you may be facing a long road of recovery. While unable to work, you may qualify to receive long-term disability benefits.

According to the Doctor's Lounge, a new study suggests that earlier chemo treatment is most beneficial to colon cancer surgery patients. So the sooner chemo begins after undergoing surgery, the better.

The study found that for every 4 week delay of chemo, it reduced an individual's chance at survival. Currently, patients don't generally begin chemo right away but the delay could seriously affect their prognosis.

So if a patient were to begin chemo 4 weeks after surgery, putting it off another month would increase the risk of death by 14%. If it were put off until week 12, the risk of death jumps to 30%.

Whether a patient has stage 1, 2, or 3 of colon cancer, the first step is usually to surgically remove the cancer. There are no guidelines for when to begin chemo after this; however, researchers hope that doctors will not delay chemo if it's not necessary.

If you have questions concerning your eligibility for long-term disability benefits, then you should speak with an Atlanta long-term disability attorney as soon as possible.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve. When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you to cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S!
