Early Dialysis May Increase Risk of Death

Kidney disease can leave an individual permanently disabled and unable to work and in need of Social Security disability benefits.

Findings from a new study show that early dialysis may actually increase the risk of death for those diagnosed with kidney disease.

Dialysis is usually given to patients who are in the advanced stages of kidney disease in order to help filter the blood. This can significantly improve the quality of life for a patient.

However, the concern is being raised is those patients who are being put on dialysis too early. When the kidneys are functioning at a high level, dialysis is not necessarily needed. In fact, this latest study indicates that it may actually be increasing a patient's odds of dying.

Specifically, it was found that those who had been put on dialysis early were more likely to die in the first year, as compared to those who began dialysis later.

At the same time, there are no clear answers as to when the appropriate time is to put a patient on dialysis. So for now, it is up to a doctor to determine this on a case by case basis.
