Electronic Medical Records Could Impact Disabled Florida Residents

The recent movement by the Social Security Administration (SSA) toward electronic medical records rather than strictly paper records will hopefully decrease the notoriously wait times associated with applying for Social Security disability benefits.

According to South Florida Business Journal, South Florida's Health Choice Network was awarded $8.5 million by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This organization plans to use the money to assist Florida healthcare providers install a system that offers electronic medical records.

Health Choice Network officials have said the federal money will be available next year and will hopefully encourage others to also install electronic record systems. This change is expected to help streamline the process of applying for disability benefits for disabled Florida residents.

So far, about 1800 primary doctors in South Florida have indicated an interest in acquiring an electronic medical records system. Health Choice Network will help them by installing the systems and training employees how to use them.

Health Choice Network has acknowledged the issues of privacy and security that are associated with an electronic system, and have promised to train doctors and their staff about security measures. Once the majority of doctors know how to use electronic medical records, disability benefit applicants will ideally experience shorter wait times to receive decisions on disability claims.
