Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment comes in all levels and degrees of strength and focus. Some veterans respond well to such non-invasive treatment as attending support groups. Others, however, require more intense therapy in order to see any results.
One of the newest treatments for PTSD is known as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and many veterans have responded well to this therapy. EMDR has the patient focus his or her eyes on either the clinician's finger moving back and forth or blinking lights.
That focus will usually be required for a couple of minutes at a time, and at the same time the veteran is attempting to remember disturbing memories. Some therapists will substitute the visual stimuli with electrical pulses placed on the veterans' palms, or tones in the veterans' ears.
EMDR is slowly being accepted as a more legitimate treatment, which is a jump given it has always been considered highly controversial. Both the Department of Defense (DoD) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA) have announced it a positive treatment for PTSD.
On its recommended treatment list, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) places EMDR third. Nobody is sure just how EMDR works, but most speculate it helps the patient "overwrite" the troubling memory with new memories.
