Employers Encouraged to Give the Disabled a Chance

If you have been receiving Social Security disability benefits, you might be hesitant to try to get a job. Not only is it difficult for anyone to get a job in this economy, but you could risk losing your benefits. However, Ticket to Work proves that this is untrue. Meanwhile, some companies are busy encouraging other employers to hire those with disabilities.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Bayer Corporation is one major employer that is trying to promote the hiring of the disabled. Statistics from the article include the fact that about 15% of the United States deals with a disability, and about 7% of that potential workforce would have trouble working a normal job. Considering that a number of disabled Americans are college students and veterans, it is safe to assume that many have the will to work, as long as they can find a job that gives them the chance.

Many employers falsely believe that hiring disabled workers would be expensive
, as they might have to furnish the office with certain disability-friendly items. However, the number of government grants available for employers of disabled workers would certainly offset any costs.

Additionally, many disabled employees are known for their resilience in all aspects of life, including their willingness to succeed and devotion to their job. For this reason, many disabled workers actually last longer at jobs than those without disabilities.

While some employers do not believe that disabled people can do the job well, others are just worried about the possibility of having to let them go. It could be for a legitimate reason, but they are anxious about possible lawsuits. However, these cases can often be handled just like they are with other workers, as most companies have a firm procedure in place that would protect them if the decision were countered.

If you are disabled and interested in getting a job, you have options. More companies are looking to hire loyal workers, and disabled employees might be the best option. If you have questions about working and still receiving disability, contact your lawyer.

If you, or your loved one, are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility.
