Ensure That Your Medicare Plan is Best for You

If you have received either Social Security disability or Supplemental Security Income for at least two years, you likely use Medicare as your main form of healthcare. If so, you have likely heard of the plan for many Medicare premiums to increase next year. This, combined with the lack of COLA, could present an economic hardship for those affected.

Though most premiums should only raise about $10 per month, if you are getting less money on each check to begin with, this could pose a problem. Most recipients of SSA payments are on a strict budget, meaning that a slight loss of money combined with a slight increase in medical payments can equal a major inconvenience.

While your current Medicare plan might have kept you afloat for years, it is possible that it is not the best plan for you anymore. In fact, the premium raise could be a great excuse to start considering other plans, as you could get a better deal than you get now.

You might find that your Medicare plan gives you the most for your money. However, you have just as high a chance as realizing that another type better serves you. You should also know that many plans that previously did not have deductibles will require them in 2010, whether for general coverage or just prescriptions.

Choose based on what you need. For example, if you do not take medications often, consider a plan that has a cheaper premium but charges deductibles for prescription medications, or perhaps does not cover them at all. Other plans pay for only generic drugs, so if you do not have to have the name brand kind, this might be a better buy for you.

You can certainly peruse the plans by yourself on the Medicare website. However, before you make a decision, you can contact your lawyer to decide if you are getting the medical support that is best for you.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility.
