In a report from
CNN Health,
excess weight in the middle is linked to increased risk of dementia in women. When dementia becomes debilitating,
Social Security disability benefits may be available.
Some risk factors for dementia are not preventable, such as a family history of it; however, other risk factors could be prevented by making healthy lifestyle changes. When there is excess amount of weight around a woman’s stomach, researchers have found
higher amounts of a hormone, known as adiponectin, are present.
Adiponectin is found to increase the risk of brain function impairment, leading to conditions such as Alzheimer’s. This is the most common form of dementia, with
nearly 80% of the elderly being impacted worldwide, according to the
World Alzheimer’s Report.
Additionally, the
Alzheimer’s Association finds that
2/3 of the patients with this debilitating disease are women and although it usually strikes older adults, dementia is beginning to develop in younger adults as well.
When a debilitating condition impacts an individual’s ability to work, they may qualify for disability benefits.
