Existing Bacterium May Be Linked to Colon Cancer

In a report from ABC News, an existing type of bacterium may be linked to colon cancer. If you have been diagnosed with cancer and it has led to disability, then you could qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

New research indicates that a bacterium, known as Fusobacterium, which causes gum disease and appendicitis, may also be responsible for creating tumors in the colon. The hope is to conduct larger studies, which if they verify the same findings, may lead to better diagnosis and potential treatment of colon cancer.

Fusobacterium is found in many disorders involving inflammation, including some strains of it being found in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. This particular bacterium was found in higher amounts with those who have colon tumors, in comparison to those who have healthy tissue.

The findings don't necessarily point to fusobacterium being the cause of colon cancer; however, further research would be needed to better understand the potential link.
