According to the New York Times, an experimental treatment may be able to treat leukemia and other types of cancers. When cancer causes you to be unable to work, then during your recovery time you could be entitled to long-term disability benefits.
The experimental treatment was performed on a patient whose leukemia wasn't responding to chemo. It involved the removal of a billion T-cells, which are a type of white blood cell that helps to combat tumors and viruses. The T-cells were given new genes designed to attack the cancer, which were then placed back into his body through his veins.
The initial reaction to the treatment wasn't good, resulting in the patient being placed into the ICU with a grim outlook; however, just a few weeks later, he completely recovered, with no cancerous cells to be found. A year later, he is still in remission.
So far only 2 other patients have undergone this experimental treatment for their chronic lymphocytic leukemia, with one experiencing a complete remission and the other only partial. More research will need to be conducted.
