Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer to get in the United States. Every year there are more than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed. This can result in the need for a patient to seek long-term disability benefits while they are recovering from life-saving treatments to fight the cancer.
The main cause of skin cancer is from the sun's ultraviolet radiation (UV). These rays are invisible to the eye but can result in significant damage. Minor damage comes in the form of sunburn but prolonged exposure can increase the risk of skin cancer.
During the dog days of summer, many people are concerned about UV exposure. Before heading out to the beach for a long Labor Day weekend or other outdoor activities many people are protecting their skin with sunscreen products.
But experts are warning of an unexpected potential source for skin cancer: the "nail" lamps used in beauty salons. The UV radiation from nail lamps may not be a well-publicized danger, but some doctors are warning that they could be hazardous. They are essentially smaller versions of the tanning beds that also emit UV radiation.
Although the likelihood of developing skin cancer from nail lamps may not be high, in one study from the Archives of Dermatology, two cases of non-melanoma skin cancer were linked to the use the UV nail lamps.
The concern is that if women visit a nail salon frequently they are increasing their exposure to UV radiation. Doctors advise using them sparingly or better yet, avoiding them-and tanning beds-altogether.
