Parkinson's disease is a debilitating condition that can lead an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits. These benefits can help cover lost wages due to an individual becoming permanently disabled.
The Parkinson's disease Foundation reports that nearly 1 million people in the United States are living with this degenerative disease. While some environmental factors, such as pesticides, have been considered as a risk factor, a new study indicates that exposure to metal may increase the risk of Parkinson's.
Metal found near sources of high manganese emissions or steel factories, could potentially be linked to the onset of Parkinson's.
The study included data of approximately 5 million people on Medicare who had remained at the same residence between the years 1995 and 2003. This was then compared to the rate of Parkinson's for those who live near industrial locales that emit manganese, lead and copper.
It was then found that those who lived in counties with high levels of manganese had more individuals diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Although the risk was only slight, it was also demonstrated that high copper emissions was a factor for Parkinson's.
While metals seem to be a contributing factor, researchers have not yet determined that they are the sole or primary cause. Nor have they ruled out other risk factors that could increase the chances of someone developing Parkinson's disease.
