Eye Implant May Help Individuals with Some Forms of Blindness

Medline Plus
reports that scientists have developed an eye implant that may help individuals with some forms of blindness. Social Security disability benefits may be available to individuals who have been diagnosed with a visual disorder.

The eye implants, developed by researchers in Germany, could potentially change the quality of life for individuals who suffer from a degenerative eye disease known as retinitis pigmentosa.
This condition affects approximately 1 in 4,000 people worldwide.

So far, there has been success with 3 patients who were able to see objects and shapes within just days of receiving the eye implants.

The eye implants are called sub-retinal implants and are placed underneath the patient's retina. These implants help to replace light receptors that are lost. The eye's natural image processing functions then work to help produce a visual image.

Researchers will now begin clinical trials with more patients and hope that in the next 5 years or so, these eye implants could significantly change the quality of life for some individuals who have certain types of blindness.

You may qualify for Social Security disability benefits if you have a visual disorder or any other condition that has permanently disabled you. A Social Security disability attorney can advise you on your eligibility.

When you are interviewing Social Security Disability attorneys ask critical questions, like: how many Social Security Disability hearings do you have per month; do you understand the SSA's POMS (the manual Social Security employees use to process claims); and, do you understand the date last insured and how it affects my disability onset date?
