Health Day reports that a new study finds high rates of missed colon cancer are often a result of improper bowel prep. A severe medical condition can leave you disabled from work in which you may be eligible to file for social security disability benefits.
The importance of colonoscopy screening cannot be overstated, since colon cancer is often a slow growing type of cancer. If precancerous polyps are detected early on, it can make a significant difference in the outcome.
In preparation for a colonoscopy, a patient's bowels must be thoroughly cleansed. This allows doctors the ability to better see any abnormalities. A failure to do so could lead to a missed diagnosis of colon cancer.
In fact, the study shows that 42% of regular tumors and 27% of advanced tumors are missed as a result of poor bowel preparation. Although, many times this is a result of patients not following instructions for the medication that must be taken in order to cleanse them.
It's no surprise however, since the entire preparation process can take as much as 16.5 hours to undergo. There's a number of other restrictive instructions involved, which can make following through difficult, leading to an end result of missed diagnosis for colon cancer.
