July will mark the first month in which family caregivers of disabled veterans will finally receive payments promised to them months ago. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will mail out more than $400,000 in stipends this month. The first 96 recipients' payments were mailed out July 1.
Those initial payments were made to the first group of family caregivers who finished their mandated caregiver training under the Comprehensive Assistance For Family Caregivers Program. Many caregivers completed all requirements only to be told they would not initially to be paid when the VA stated they would be paid.
Now the funding has apparently arrived and caregivers will receive $1,600 a month, on average. The first couple of checks will be retroactive to application date, so they will hover around $2,500 each, on average. By the end of July, 176 family caregivers will receive the stipend. Caregivers must undergo specialized training but are also offered benefits. The mandatory training was specially designed for this program and many caregivers have given it positive feedback. Caregivers can also elect to access mental health services as well as insurance for health care.
