FDA Approves 1st Stem Cell Clinical Trial for Spinal Cord Injury Patients

The FDA has approved the first stem cell clinical trial. This may be hopeful news to combat some of the debilitating conditions from which many Americans suffer. This particular stem cell clinical trial will be for those with spinal cord injuries. Spinal cord injuries can lead to a person becoming permanently disabled. Those who are permanently disabled may qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

In this clinical trail, embryonic stem cells will be turned into precursors of neural support cells. These cells are called oligodendrocytes and would then be injected into the site of the injury in the spinal cord.

What researchers hope to see happen is that the cells will begin to repair, allowing some of the nerves to be able to carry signals. Although this is not expected to alleviate all symptoms of a spinal cord injury, it could potentially restore some sensation and movement.

As many as 10 patients will be involved in the Phase 1 study. The goal at this point is to test the safety of the therapy. It will take years of additional testing before the therapy could be approved for use, if the study proves to be successful.

If you suffer from a severe mental or physical condition, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a Social Security disability attorney who can help determine eligibility.
