Federal Grant Helps Blind Veterans

April 27, 2010 - A new program is being launched to help train individuals in how to care for blind veterans. The fall of 2011 will see the launch of a 22-month program and will be added to Northern Illinois University's (NIU) disability education program. The NIU disability education program trains students to be teachers for adults and children with visual disabilities.

This new program will be funded by a new $600,000 federal grant and will be used to train 10 students to care for blind veterans. The grant falls under The Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2010 and funds:

  • Tuition;
  • Fees;
  • Health insurance; and
  • Annual stipends for students.

 The 10 students funded under the program will be groomed to work as specialists in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) once they graduate in order to replace VA specialists expecting to retire. Upon completion of this program, these students will have earned master's degrees with specializations. Congress has already dog-eared more money for the VA to put toward services for the blind veterans.

The continuing wars are producing veterans with eye injuries at levels that must be addressed. Of all the soldiers wounded in these wars, about 13% have suffered a serious eye injury of some type.
