The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been intensifying their efforts to help female veterans get the help and benefits they need by hiring additional "benefits coordinators specifically assigned to help female veterans file claims," according to an article in The Navy Times.
Additionally, as part of their own "outreach efforts," the VA is also placing more women in a position to handle female veterans with disabilities. Those women are being put in place to specifically help female veterans who file claims based on disability resulting from sexual trauma.
These improvements, among others, should take place over the next 12-18 months. In addition to adding more specialized benefits coordinators, the VA plans to also begin automating more claims. The end result of the automation is more people available to provide help to those in need.
Female veterans have been referred to as "vanishing veterans" because a large percentage of them don't seek out the therapeutic help they need for any number of reasons. A very large obstacle to overcome is that many female veterans don't identify themselves as veterans, so they don't believe they're entitled to the help.
A task force is planned to be set up to study other problems female veterans are facing, such as higher than average unemployment rates than male veterans of the same age group.
